If you're having trouble sleeping, a new study conducted by Chinese scientists could be real news for you. According to the study, listening to slow instrumental or classical music before bed improves sleep quality in adults over 50.
Scientists analyzed the results of ten studies covering more than 600 people. As a result, it was observed that participants who listened to quiet music for 20-60 minutes before going to bed every day had a significantly improved sleep. Researchers say that music lowers cortisol levels (the stress hormone), slows down heart rate and breathing, which helps the body relax and fall asleep easily.
Experts emphasize that this effect is beneficial not only physically but also mentally. Music affects brain function, stabilizes emotional state, and helps get rid of emotional disturbances that disrupt sleep. Also, music forms new positive psychological habits associated with sleep and reduces the impact of harmful habits.
Music therapy can take various forms - sometimes multiple listenings, and sometimes several months of continuous sessions. Usually, the tempo of such music is around 60-85 beats per minute. Scientists note that this method is "moderately or significantly effective" in combating insomnia.
Experts add that music therapy is considered a safe and natural alternative to medications. This is especially important for people who do not want to take sleeping pills for a long time.
