Tomatoes, often considered a common vegetable, have been scientifically proven to be a significant source of benefits for the cardiovascular system. New research published in the scientific journal Food & Function (F&F) has revealed that the lycopene pigment found in tomatoes has a remarkable impact on reducing blood pressure.
Experts highlight that lycopene is a natural antioxidant that gives tomatoes their red color, protects the walls of blood vessels, reduces inflammation risks, and supports heart function. Regular consumption of tomatoes is particularly beneficial in reducing risks associated with hypertension.
The authors of the study recommend a daily intake of 5–30 mg of lycopene as a beneficial amount. This corresponds to the consumption of about two medium-sized tomatoes. According to the researchers, this amount is sufficient to have a positive effect on blood pressure.
At the same time, specialists emphasize that tomatoes should not be considered a medicine. While they do not replace medical treatment, they can serve as a complementary component in maintaining blood pressure within a healthy dietary regimen.
In conclusion, incorporating tomatoes into one’s daily diet is not only delicious but also a wise choice for heart health. More extensive research in this area is expected to be conducted in the future.
