Manchester City head coach Pep Guardiola explained why the changes in the starting lineup occurred just before the match against Real Madrid. According to the Spanish expert, these decisions were not a "sudden rotation," but a clear plan drawn up taking into account the opponent's strengths.
Guardiola first touched upon the matter of Niko O'Reilly. He addressed journalists with a rhetorical question: How many times did O'Reilly play as a left back this season? That is, according to the coach, the choice in this position is not an "experiment" - the team has believed in him before, he has played in such a role.
Pep emphasized that the only real change was related to Abdukodir Khusanov. The reason is clear: Vinicius moves more actively in that particular area, on that wing. That's why City wanted to bring in a player who doesn't hesitate too much in attack, doesn't think too much, and makes quick decisions. That is, Khusanov's choice is tied to the idea of limiting Vinicius's risk and placing a ready-made option in that zone, both physically and in terms of speed.
The coach also spoke specifically about the wingers. According to him, the wing players had been experiencing injury problems for about two months, but after returning, they looked better. Guardiola cited Savino's performance against Newcastle as an example, while Jeremy Doco emphasized that he is a player who always creates danger and pulls the opponent back.
It was also noted that the presence of experienced players - Bernardo Silva and Rodri - is an important part of the plan. According to Guardiola, they are essential for controlling rebounded goals, controlling tempo, and "setting the game in order." Nico O'Reilly and Antoine Semeno were mentioned as players who tend to run and work extensively. The coach added that they also have a "sense of goal," and standard situations were also considered in the plan.
When asked about "rotation," Pep openly stated that it's not something new. He recalled that he also made a big change in the squad in the match against Newcastle - nine other players came on the field then. So, this season "City" is forced to quickly change the lineup depending on the situation, and this, in his opinion, is normal.
At the end, Guardiola explained the plan very clearly: the goal was to keep the opponent "occupied" below through the wings, approach the penalty area through midfielders, control second balls with experienced players, and maximize the use of fast players in the back line. "That was the idea," Pep said.
In short, Guardiola portrayed these decisions not as a "coincidence," but as a device prepared against the opponent's weapons. Now, the most interesting aspect of football is not theory, but practice: the result and the pace of the game itself will tell how well these ideas worked on the field.
