Summer is a season of sunshine, fresh fruits and vegetables, and eagerly awaited vacations. However, during this very period, hospitals observe a sharp increase in intestinal infections. What is the reason behind this, and how can we protect ourselves and our children?
Why do intestinal infections spread rapidly in summer?
According to paramedic Aruzhan Khanturina, when temperatures rise above 25 degrees Celsius, bacteria and viruses begin to multiply rapidly on food and hands. Food improperly stored in hot weather can become a source of infection within hours.
The specialist highlights that salmonellosis, dysentery, rotavirus, and foodborne intoxications are especially common. Children, elderly people, and those with weak immunity are particularly at risk. Even mild forms of these illnesses can lead to serious complications.
Main cause of infections: neglecting hygiene
The healthcare worker emphasizes that 70% of intestinal infections are transmitted through dirty hands. Throughout the day, people touch money, door handles, phones, and various items, forgetting to wash their hands before eating. This creates a favorable environment for bacteria and viruses.
Hands should be washed thoroughly with soap for at least 30 seconds before eating, after using the restroom, and after coming in from outside. Antiseptic use, especially outdoors, should be frequent. Cleanliness under fingernails is crucial, as many microbes accumulate there.
How to store products correctly?
Dairy products, meat, eggs, ready-made salads, and mayonnaise-based sauces are particularly dangerous in summer. The specialist advises against buying meat and dairy products at markets lacking refrigeration.
Even minor changes in food—slight sour taste or strange smell—may indicate contamination.
Water quality and safety
According to the World Health Organization, the risk of infections like enterovirus and salmonella rises in summer. Often, they are transmitted through dirty water and unwashed fruits and vegetables. Bottled or filtered water is highly recommended, especially when traveling abroad.
Children's safety
According to the paramedic, children experience infections severely and quickly become dehydrated. Regularly disinfect toys and items children play with, and never allow them to eat food that fell on the ground or sand.
Essential items for your first aid kit
Before traveling in summer, assemble a kit containing:
- Antiseptics;
- Enterosorbents (activated charcoal);
- Fever reducers;
- Anti-diarrheal medications;
- Personal utensils and wet wipes;
- Bottled water (minimum daily supply).
When to seek medical help?
If you or your child experience vomiting, high fever, diarrhea, dry mouth, or blood in stool, seek professional medical care immediately to prevent serious complications.
