Clinical psychologist and researcher Derrick Hall emphasized that the main reason people use chatbots is the ease of accessing psychological support through them. According to RollingStone, communicating with an AI-based “virtual psychotherapist” is considered cheaper, faster, and more convenient than visiting a live specialist.
According to the psychologist, chatbots can provide empathetic responses tailored to human needs, which gives people the opportunity to hear exactly what they want to hear. At the same time, many patients are inclined to share their personal problems not with people, but with an electronic interlocutor. Chatbots are ready to help around the clock, and their annual subscription fee equals the price of a single visit to a real specialist.
However, Hall pointed out that long-term and excessive use of artificial intelligence can distance a person from real life. The reason is that AI effectively takes advantage of people’s need for accuracy.
In the specialist’s view, chatbots have both positive and negative aspects. Therefore, this technology should be seen not as a complete replacement for human involvement, but as an auxiliary tool.
