Tesla buys AI company for $2 billion

"Tesla" announced in its report on the first quarter of 2026 that it had acquired an unknown company that manufactures equipment for artificial intelligence. The deal is valued at $2 billion and will be paid in stock. Interestingly, the company's management did not mention this major deal during a meeting with shareholders or in the quarterly report presentation. This is reported by Electrek.co reports .
According to financial documents, only $200 million of the $2 billion is a guaranteed payment. The remaining $1.8 billion will be paid in installments based on the successful implementation of the acquired company's technologies and the performance of the engineering team. Experts believe that such a structure indicates that Tesla is investing in a promising technology that has not yet fully proven itself.
The name and field of activity of the acquired company have not yet been disclosed. This acquisition comes at a time when Tesla's spending in the artificial intelligence sector has sharply increased. The company plans to spend over $25 billion in 2026 on projects in this area, including the construction of the "AI5" chip and the "Terafab" semiconductor plant.
Experts consider it risky for Tesla to direct such large funds to artificial intelligence at a time when profits from its core automotive business are declining. Although the company's net profit was $477 million, investments related to artificial intelligence reached $4 billion in just one quarter.
