Uzbekistan and Japan have agreed to create a new investment platform for mutual cooperation. Under this platform, cooperation projects exceeding a total value of $12 billion will be implemented.
The initiative was proposed during negotiations held in Tokyo between Uzbekistan's President Shavkat Mirziyoyev and Japan's Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi. The new platform is aimed at accelerating the implementation of large-scale projects between the two countries and streamlining the process of attracting Japanese investments into Uzbekistan's economy.
This approach envisions a shift from financing individual projects to establishing long-term and systematic investment cooperation. It was noted during the talks that the portfolio of projects formed during the visit covers priority sectors such as energy, industry, transport, infrastructure, education, and others.
The Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and the Japan Bank for International Cooperation (JBIC) will participate in creating the investment platform. These organizations have already been actively involved in several projects in Uzbekistan.
The new platform is expected to reduce risks for Japanese investors while making the conditions for operating in Uzbekistan's market more stable and transparent. A "umbrella" mechanism will be established primarily to fund key initiatives in areas such as "green" energy, industrial modernization, and high technologies.
It was also highlighted that Japan is not only interested in participating in individual projects but is also keen on integrating more deeply into Uzbekistan's long-term economic development programs. Meanwhile, Tashkent hopes to attract additional technological and managerial expertise to the country through the new format.
The agreement on this investment platform is consolidated in a Joint Statement on expanding strategic partnership between the two nations and forms part of the comprehensive agreements achieved during the visit. Earlier, Shavkat Mirziyoyev, during a summit held in Tokyo, had advanced cooperation initiatives between Central Asian countries and Japan.
