Nuclear Energy-Powered Data Center: A Step Toward the Digital Future

Data center powered by nuclear energy: a step toward the digital future

The Agency for the Development of Nuclear Energy (Uzatom) and Muroosystems Corporation have initiated work on a new innovative and strategically significant data center project in Uzbekistan. This project proposes an unconventional approach that could fundamentally transform modern digital infrastructure: the data center will be entirely powered by electricity generated from nuclear energy, specifically through small modular reactors (SMRs).

The project is designed to provide a consistent and predictable power capacity of 50 megawatts. Today, data centers form the backbone of essential but often invisible infrastructure for internet, banking systems, cloud services, and artificial intelligence. However, they demand vast and uninterrupted electricity supply.

This is where traditional "green energy" falls short. The sun may set, or the wind may cease, but servers must continue to operate without interruption. The proposed solution addresses this issue. Small modular reactors are compact, simple, and can be located close to consumers. As a result, the generated energy is directly allocated to meet the data center's energy needs.

This approach ensures the key factors for data centers—stability and continuity. As a source of "constant generation," nuclear energy can become a reliable cornerstone for the digital economy.

If successfully implemented, this initiative will prove that small modular reactors are not only viable for cities or industries but also for high-tech facilities. It could also transform how data center locations are decided in the future—placing them closer to energy sources.

Notably, this project is being regarded as a critical experiment at the intersection of nuclear energy and the digital economy. It is expected to demonstrate that internet infrastructure can be as stable, precise, and comprehensible in engineering terms as electric power plants.

It has been reported that this data center project is part of the agreements reached during the discussions between Shavkat Mirziyoyev and Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi held in Tokyo. This highlights the project's international significance and strategic future potential.
