China sets records for grain yields
China plans to harvest a total of 706.5 million tons of corn, rice and wheat in the 2024-2025 season. This is 1.6% more than the previous season, when the harvest was 695.4 million tons. This data from the National Bureau of Statistics of China was published by Grain Central.

Sown areas expanded by 0.3% in a year, reaching 119.3 million hectares, and the average yield of the three main grain crops increased by 1.3%, reaching 59.2 quintals per hectare.

Corn occupies the largest area among the country's grain crops. In 2024, a record high yield of 294.9 million tons was harvested from 44.7 million hectares. The focus on high-yielding varieties has been important in increasing yields.

According to forecasts, corn imports to China will decrease to 14 million tons. In the 2023-2024 season, China purchased 23.4 million tons of corn grain from abroad.

Rice is the country's second grain crop in terms of area and yield. This season, it is planned to harvest 207.5 million tons from 29 million hectares. The average yield per hectare is expected to be 71.5 centners.

According to the FAS forecast, the country's domestic demand for rice will amount to 145 million tons, and 1 million tons of rice can be exported.

China has long been the world leader in wheat production. In the 2024-2025 season, a record harvest of 140.1 million tons is planned from 23.6 million hectares of land, which is 2.6 percent more than last season, or 3.5 million tons of additional wheat. The average yield will be 59.4 centners per hectare, an increase of 2.8 percent compared to last year.
