Nowadays, in Kazakhstan, a legal conclusion has been put to the issue of “bride kidnapping,” which for many years has caused debates and discussions. From September 16, the law came into force in the country, according to which forcing girls into marriage is recognized as a crime. This was officially announced by the Ministry of Internal Affairs.
A new stage in legislation
According to reports, the amendments introduced into the legislation are aimed at strengthening the protection of citizens’ rights and freedoms. Now the article called “Forced marriage” provides for various penalties for such actions. In particular, the offender may be punished with a fine, correctional labor, community service, restriction of liberty, or imprisonment. If such actions lead to serious consequences, the punishment term may be extended from five to ten years.
Important aspects of the law
At the same time, several previously existing concessions were abolished. For example, previously, if a person voluntarily released the abducted girl, he could be exempted from criminal liability. Now, even in such a case, the offender must bear responsibility before the law. This is considered an important step in preventing marriages based on violence.
The goal – protection of vulnerable groups
According to the Ministry of Internal Affairs, these legal changes are primarily aimed at protecting women and minors. Because forced marriage grossly violates human rights and causes numerous social problems in society.
Fight against cybercrime
The new legal reforms are not limited to forced marriage. Now, criminal liability has also been introduced for cybercrime and financial fraud. For example, illegal access to bank accounts, cashing out stolen funds, or transferring money in the interests of third parties are considered crimes. These changes play a significant role in combating fraud schemes carried out via the internet.
Tradition and the new law
It is known that in Kazakhstan the custom of bride kidnapping has existed since ancient times. In some cases, it was carried out with the mutual consent of the young couple, but more often it was applied against the will of the girl. Nowadays, the state and public organizations are striving to completely eliminate such practices. Experts emphasize that although this custom has ancient roots, it is absolutely unacceptable in modern society.
