Thousands of students protest against university policy

In the southwestern Serbian city of Novi Pazar, thousands of students and activists held a protest against pressure at state universities. The action was part of a nationwide student protest movement. It was the first large student demonstration held in Novi Pazar.

The protests are linked to demonstrations that began after the roof of a railway station collapsed in the city of Novi Sad last year, killing 16 people. Students from Novi Pazar previously drew national attention after walking for several days to take part in protests marking the anniversary of the tragedy.

Students accuse the university leadership of revoking student status from those who took part in protests and dismissing lecturers. According to them, about 200 students lost their right to study, and more than 30 lecturers were dismissed. Protesters are demanding the resignation of the university leadership.

During the protest, participants observed a moment of silence for the victims. Students said the issue concerns not only one city, but the entire higher education system of the country. Authorities deny the accusations made by the students.
