The head of a Russian defence equipment factory, Vladimir Arsenyev, set himself on fire in Red Square. He said he took this action because of financial and production problems at his company.
After the start of military operations against Ukraine, his company had to supply components for tank crew communication devices. Production had to be accelerated and deadlines strictly met. If contracts were not fulfilled, the Russian government threatened criminal liability.
Due to financial and management problems, the company faced the risk of bankruptcy. Under these conditions, Arsenyev set himself on fire in central Moscow in July 2024. He was treated in hospital for severe burns.
Arsenyev’s case shows the pressure on Russian defence industry companies. The factory is still operating, but orders have decreased and the company has reduced its workload.
