According to Politico sources, the United States may step up its influence over Greenland in the coming months and begin moves toward establishing control. The outlet writes that Washington aims to tie the process to the midterm congressional elections in November or to the 250th anniversary of US independence celebrated on July 4. Mujtaba Rahman, managing director for Europe at the Eurasia Group analytical center, told Politico that the US is unlikely to choose a hardline scenario like the one in Venezuela. In his view, Washington could launch a “political influence campaign” to shift the current balance of power.
Rahman did not rule out attempts to sway local politicians or offer financial incentives, which could ultimately expand the US military and civilian presence. He stressed that such a scenario is “real and serious.”
Donald Trump, who returned to the White House in January 2025, has repeatedly said he intends to annex Greenland to the United States. In a January 4 interview with The Atlantic, he called the island “absolutely essential” for US defense and pointed to the presence of Russian and Chinese ships in the region.
Reuters notes that US actions in Venezuela have heightened concerns among European leaders that Greenland could also face a similar pressure scenario.
