Following tense meetings at the World Economic Forum in Davos, it has been reported that trilateral talks involving Ukraine, Russia and the United States are being prepared. The meetings are scheduled to take place on January 23–24 in the United Arab Emirates. This was reported by podrobno.uz reports .
On January 22 in Davos, US President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky held talks for nearly an hour. After the meeting, Trump briefly described the conversation as “good,” said that “everyone wants the war to end,” and left Switzerland.
However, Western media are interpreting the dialogue more cautiously. According to the Financial Times, Zelensky was unable to formalize specific commitments on security guarantees and post-war reconstruction. Documents pre-agreed with the Trump administration were also left unsigned.
After meeting his American counterpart, Zelensky delivered a sharp speech at the forum, accusing European leaders of indecisiveness due to internal disagreements. He said the situation has barely changed over the past year and that Europe still cannot demonstrate sufficient political will to defend itself. Zelensky stressed that instead of becoming a “global power,” Europe remains a “beautiful but divided” collection of states.
He also criticized Trump’s proposed new “peace council” initiative, saying Europe has not developed a unified position on the matter. In Zelensky’s view, the council includes countries with sharply diverging interests, while at the front there is not even a ceasefire regime.
Zelensky urged Europeans to take tougher steps: stop and confiscate Russian oil transported via the “shadow fleet.” He also called the situation in Iran tragic and noted that the international community is not providing enough support to the people in their struggle against the regime.
As the next stage of the process, the meetings in the UAE were described by Zelensky as dialogue at a “technical level.” The delegations of the three countries are expected to discuss the details of a possible compromise over two days.
At the same time, it was reported that direct talks between US representatives and Russian President Vladimir Putin were scheduled for the evening of January 22 ahead of this stage.
