Do omega-3s really slow down the aging process?
Swiss researchers have proven that daily consumption of omega-3 slows down the natural aging process in the body. The scientific study involved 777 people aged 70 and older. The results of the scientists were published in the journal Nature Aging.

It was found that healthy elderly people who consumed one gram of omega-3 daily for three years had a biological age that was three months younger than other participants. In addition, adding vitamin D to the diet and physical exercise (30 minutes three times a week) increased this result by four months.

Scientists used biological tools called epigenetic clocks to assess the effect of omega-3 on the rate of aging.

An epigenetic clock is a set of specific DNA marks that allow us to determine the biological age of tissues, cells and organs.

“I think that 70 years is like turning 50 a second time. Of course, this method cannot cure aging, but the results of the study confirm how effective this method is. Regular intake of small doses of omega-3 and vitamin D and physical activity really extend a person’s life,” says Steve Horvath, a researcher at the biotechnology company Altos Labs.

Previous studies have shown that omega-3, found in foods such as oily fish, nuts, and seeds, slows down the aging process. However, until recently, it was unknown whether taking it as a vitamin supplement could also have positive effects.

Scientists have also noted other beneficial properties of omega-3 fatty acids. In particular, this substance reduces the incidence of sudden falls in older people by 10% and the risk of infections by 13%. In addition, omega-3, vitamin D, and regular exercise reduced the risk of invasive cancer by 61%.
