Scientists at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in the USA have created two new types of antibiotics using artificial intelligence. They are capable of killing dangerous bacteria resistant to medications — gonorrhea and MRSA (methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus). BBC reported this.
The drugs have so far only been tested in the laboratory on animals and have shown good results. However, before they can be used on humans, they need 1–2 more years of improvement and clinical trials.
Artificial intelligence was initially trained with data on the composition of various antibiotics and their effects on bacteria. Then the scientists worked in two directions: one based on existing chemical compounds, and the other giving the AI full freedom.
As a result, two drugs were created that are safe for humans and have a composition not previously seen. They were tested on mice and found to be effective. Scientists say these antibiotics could play an important role in the future fight against drug-resistant diseases.
