Neck pain, headache, fatigue — the pillow might be to blame

According to Hiroshi Tanaka, a leading pain specialist at the Tokyo Spine Institute in Japan, most people unknowingly harm their neck and shoulder muscles every night during sleep. Research shows that ordinary pillows fail to keep muscles relaxed, causing them to remain tense throughout the night. Over time, this leads to pain, fatigue, and decreased sleep quality.

Tanaka explains that such muscle tension causes pain not only in the neck but also in the shoulders and upper back. In addition, due to slower blood circulation, these muscles don’t receive enough oxygen, resulting in constant tiredness and weakness. “Ordinary pillows hold the body in the wrong position and gradually exhaust the organism,” he says.

The research also found that using the wrong pillow may cause headaches and even some neurological problems. Doctors believe that people usually try to treat the symptoms, but the real cause — using the wrong pillow — is often ignored.

To address this problem, Tanaka participated in developing a new type of ergonomically and physiologically designed pillow. The pillow created by his team keeps the neck and spine properly aligned, reduces muscle pressure, and helps the body reach a natural resting state. Experts believe that choosing the right pillow can significantly improve sleep quality and help maintain healthy neck muscles.
