6 important reasons: why isn't online learning as effective as expected?

The field of online education had already begun to develop significantly, but the coronavirus pandemic in 2020 accelerated and expanded this process. Currently, it is possible to master almost everything while sitting at home, except for medicine and some other special areas. At the same time, there are a number of common factors hindering the learning process in online education.

Therefore, to make online learning effective, it is first necessary to fully understand the nature of this process and the difficulties associated with it. Someone will use this method to acquire new skills and will be happy to learn without additional effort, since it is enough to turn on the computer. Others, as you know, pay for dozens of online courses, but there are no results.

Each of us learns differently and at different levels. This doesn't mean that someone is worse or better than others; this process occurs only under the influence of character, experience, and sometimes genetics.

1. Lack of motivation

Much has been written and said about motivation, as if everyone has become a specialist in this field. But the problem is that we often don't ask ourselves the most important question: "Why do I need this?"

From childhood, we were taught that it's important to do what we need, not what we want. In reality, the strongest motivator is the feeling that we really want something and have a clear, joyful goal. For this, first of all, it is necessary to find the answer to the question: "Why do I need this?"

It's the same with online learning: you can explain, but if you don't understand it yourself, this process won't help. As a result, the learning process becomes uninteresting, attention is lost, and it becomes increasingly difficult to force yourself to acquire new knowledge over time. Therefore, it is important to determine the significance of this process for effective learning.

2. Not wanting to learn, but only wanting to study

Some people fall into a dangerous trap behind the mask of "I love reading." In reality, starting something new or changing something in life can seem frightening. For example, someone wants to change their profession. In this case, studying, even if it's difficult, seems like a safe path - there's always a teacher or curator by your side. Unclear assignments, exams, even low grades still don't lead to big mistakes.

Starting a new profession is already like "untying the safety net and climbing a steep cliff." No one is waiting for you on this peak. For this reason, many people justify themselves by saying "I don't have enough knowledge yet" and start taking one course after another or completely abandon this field. As a result, even if the learning outcomes are good, they are not applied in life, and such learning will not be effective.

3. Lack of live communication

We often describe ourselves as "introverted" and think that we only need knowledge and don't need to communicate with people. But in reality, live communication is one of the most important factors that is missing in online education.

Firstly, this communication allows you to immediately discuss new ideas and questions when they arise. When people share their viewpoints, sometimes you hear a point of view you've never thought about. In such debates, truth is born. If one person thinks well, two people will think even better.

Secondly, a friendly environment and healthy competition inspire many. Some read only out of curiosity, while others act with the inner impulse "I need to manage it too."

Thirdly, networking - acquaintances acquired through education - can bring great benefits to your future work activities. If you're planning to work in the field you're studying, connections in that particular field will take you forward faster.

4. Excessive freedom in education

One of the most promoted aspects of online learning is the ability to study at any time, take breaks, or adapt classes to a personal schedule. While this may seem convenient, it actually becomes a trap that reduces efficiency for many people.

In such conditions, iron discipline and strong motivation are needed to continue learning. Most people have a habit of postponing tasks: no one asks, there are no fines, no emergencies. As a result, classes stop. Therefore, online education should also have a clear plan and strict deadlines.

5. Unrealistic expectations

Course organizers often make unnecessary promises: the material will be understandable to everyone, the acquired knowledge will be immediately applied in practice, and it will even be easier to find a job. But in real life, the result can be different.

This doesn't mean the courses are bad, but in online education, many factors affect the result. If you think everything will change just by enrolling in a course, you can quickly become disappointed. Therefore, it is important to set realistic and logical goals.

6. Trying to do many things at the same time

Many believe that online learning can be combined with homework: cooking, laundry, and other activities while attending classes. But this approach is ineffective - there is no such thing as multitasking.

You can do several things at the same time, but each of them turns out to be of poor quality.
