Zelensky said how many Ukrainian soldiers died in the war
About 45,100 Ukrainian servicemen were killed in the war against Russia, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said.

Zelensky also said that about 390,000 Ukrainian defenders were injured.

"I will clarify: the number of injuries is higher than the number of wounded, because there are people who were wounded, then returned to the battlefield and were injured again," he explained.

Zelensky also estimated the number of Russian losses. According to him, about 350,000 Russians were killed during the attack on Ukraine, and another 600-700,000 were wounded.

In December, Zelensky said that 43,000 Ukrainian soldiers had been killed

In early December 2024, the Ukrainian leader reported that 43,000 Ukrainian soldiers had been killed and another 370,000 wounded since the start of the war. He noted that “about 50 percent of the wounded will return to the front line and all injuries, including minor and recurrent ones, will be recorded.”

The UALossess project, which collects data on Ukrainian casualties based on open data, reported more than 63,000 Ukrainian military deaths.

The Economist wrote in late November that Ukraine may have lost between 60,000 and 100,000 soldiers since the start of the war. The publication, citing Western intelligence agencies, statements by US administration officials and open sources, noted that about 400,000 Ukrainian soldiers were injured to the point of not being able to return to the front lines.

Earlier, the Ukrainian president said that if the only way to bring peace to the population was to sit down at the negotiating table with Russian President Vladimir Putin, he was ready for this.

"If this is the only configuration in which we can achieve peace for Ukrainians and not lose people, then of course we will go for it," Zelensky said.

He also stressed that at present Ukraine cannot regain all the territories and "it cannot lose millions of people for the sake of an unlikely result."

Ukraine's conditions for ending the war

Ukraine is demanding the implementation of the "peace formula", which provides for the withdrawal of troops to the 1991 borders. The issue is about the “referendums” held there in 2014 and 2022 by Russia and the illegal annexation of Crimea, Donetsk, Luhansk, Kherson and Zaporizhia regions of Ukraine. Moscow excludes the possibility of negotiations based on the “peace formula”.

Russian conditions

Putin has put forward his own conditions for a ceasefire, including the withdrawal of Ukrainian troops from the self-proclaimed independent DPR, LKR, Kherson and Zaporizhia regions, the international recognition of these four regions and Crimea as part of Russia, Ukraine’s refusal to join NATO and the lifting of sanctions. Zelensky called the proposal an “unbelievable” ultimatum.
