The Barcelona V (KM) ferry, moving from the Talaud Islands to the city of Manado in Indonesia, burned in a panic-filled night that shocked the public. According to Channel News Asia, at least 3 people died as a result of the fire on board, including a pregnant woman. CNN Indonesia specifically emphasized that one of the victims was a pregnant woman.
There were a total of 280 people on the ferry. The tragedy occurred around 12:00 local time (10:00 Tashkent time) in the waters between the Talise and Biaro islands. According to eyewitnesses, thick black smoke started rising from the lower decks, after which passengers panicked and began massively jumping into the sea.
Videos circulated on social media show people screaming and asking for help, the deck is overcrowded, and the situation is escalating. The ship’s crew tried to distribute life jackets. With their help, some people managed to put on safety gear before jumping into the water.
One of the most striking events of the sea drama was the live broadcast video by a passenger named Abdul Rahmad Agu. Holding a crying child in his arms, he stood in the water and said in the live stream: “Help us, KM Barcelona V is on fire! There are still many people on board. We’re burning at sea, we need help quickly!”
The Indonesian Navy quickly dispatched three ships to begin rescue operations. Local fishermen also actively participated in the evacuation. According to the latest reports, around 150 people were rescued, but 130 are still considered missing.
The cause of the fire is still unknown, but it is assumed to have started on the third deck and quickly spread throughout the ferry. An official conclusion has not yet been made, but this tragedy once again highlights the need for serious attention to safety on passenger ferries in Indonesia.
