Former advisor killed in Astana city

Former advisor to the President of Kazakhstan Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, Erzhan Babakumarov, died in Astana as a result of a conflict with an acquaintance. This was reported by Orda.kz, citing police information.
According to the investigation, an argument erupted between 56-year-old Babakumarov and a 36-year-old man, turning into a fight during which the former official sustained serious injuries and died. A criminal case has been opened against the suspect, who is currently being held in a temporary detention center.
After Kassym-Jomart Tokayev assumed the presidency in 2019, Babakumarov was appointed as his advisor. However, after a few months, he left this position.
From April 2019 until February 2022, he served as deputy mayor of Almaty, and after the events of January 2022, he resigned.
