Brewery closures hit a record in the UK

During 2025, about 140 brewery enterprises in the UK ceased operations. This is the highest annual indicator since 1974.

The Independent Brewers Association (SIBA) reported this, citing The Daily Telegraph.

The company's executive director, Andy Slee, noted that despite the still high demand for kraft beer, the closure of breweries has reached a record level in the last year. According to him, the number of operating breweries in all regions of the country is steadily decreasing.

Experts point to the increased tax burden as the main factor in the closure of beer production enterprises. In particular, the increase in excise tax and value-added tax on alcoholic products creates serious difficulties for entrepreneurs in the sphere.

Now, according to Slee, the sharp increase in taxes is negatively affecting the activities of beer producers, seriously damaging not only the work of breweries, but also pubs, which are their main clients. This situation also contributes to the rise of major global beer brands to a high position in the market.
