The involvement of forced labor in the population census was exposed

In Uzbekistan, some local authorities have identified instances of forced involvement of employees in census activities outside of working hours. According to the Labor Inspectorate, such work was carried out in some places under the name of "compulsory assignment."
Based on the results of the inspections, official warning letters were sent to the khokimiyats of the city of Bukhara and the Altynkul, Asaka, and Markhamat districts. A submission has also been submitted to the Andijan regional administration to eliminate the identified violations.
The Labor Inspectorate emphasized that involving an employee in overtime work without their consent, based on various pressures or official assignments, is considered forced labor and contradicts the requirements of current legislation. Serious concern is caused by the fact that such cases are committed by state bodies.
The Inspectorate reminded that overtime work can be carried out only with the voluntary consent of the employee. In this case, in accordance with Article 262 of the Labor Code, appropriate remuneration must be paid. According to the law, wages for the first two hours are paid at a rate of at least 1.5 times, and for more than two hours - at a rate of at least 2 times.
