Belgium has announced plans to expand its diplomatic presence in Central Asia and will open an embassy in Tashkent for the first time. This decision is part of comprehensive reforms in Belgium's foreign policy system, according to the Belgian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
According to the ministry, Central Asia is regarded as a strategically important region, particularly in the context of developing the Trans-Caspian corridor, also known as the "new Silk Road." The ministry emphasized that other countries are actively investing in Central Asia, and Belgium also aims to strengthen its position to keep up with global trends.
In addition to Tashkent, Belgium will open new diplomatic missions in Tirana (Albania), Windhoek (Namibia), and Muscat (Oman), and will appoint a permanent representative to the African Union in Addis Ababa. At the same time, the country has decided to close eight diplomatic missions: embassies in Sarajevo, Conakry, Bamako, and Kuwait, the diplomatic office in Mozambique, as well as consulates in Havana, Rio de Janeiro, and Guangzhou.
