The year 2025 became one of the darkest years for Iran in terms of capital punishment. According to human rights organizations, at least more than 1,900 death sentences were carried out in the country within a single year. This is the highest figure recorded over the past 11 years.
The annual report prepared by Human Rights Activists in Iran (HRA) states that the number of executions nearly doubled compared to the previous year. At the same time, the number of new death sentences issued by courts, on the contrary, decreased to some extent.
The most alarming aspect is that almost all executions were carried out secretly. According to the report, approximately 95 percent of death sentences were not officially announced by the authorities. The data were collected through relatives of prisoners, lawyers, prison staff, and local sources.
Experts do not rule out that due to the closed nature of the system, the actual figures may be even higher. This situation is regarded as a serious signal of further escalation of human rights issues in Iran.
