Cases of acute malnutrition among children have surged sharply in Sudan’s war-torn North Darfur state. UNICEF has called for urgent access to the area so humanitarian aid can reach affected families. This was reported by podrobno.uz.reports.
According to Al Jazeera, acute malnutrition was found in 53% of 500 children screened in the Um Baru area. One in six is suffering from severe wasting— a life-threatening condition that can lead to death within weeks without urgent treatment.
UNICEF Executive Director Catherine Russell stressed that time is critical: every day without access to aid increases the death toll. It is noted that around 100,000 refugees are currently living in Um Baru.
The conflict that began in 2023 has killed thousands, forced more than 12 million people to flee their homes, and triggered famine in parts of the country. According to the UN, Sudan is now facing one of the world’s “most severe humanitarian crises.”
