Former Apple employee tells how he became a meme

The former Apple employee shared how he became a meme
In 2012, Sam worked at the Apple store in Vancouver and unexpectedly became famous, reported Business Insider. The reason was his name — Sam Sung, which was identical to the name of Apple’s main competitor, Samsung.

Photos of his business card spread on social networks, and jokes like "Samsung works at Apple" appeared. At first, Sam thought he would be fired.

"They would call me from the store, journalists would come, and my colleagues were forbidden from talking about me," he says. A year later, he left Apple and decided to turn this event into something positive — he sold his business card and Apple-logoed uniform at auction and donated $2,500 to charity.

Later, he changed his surname to Struan, in honor of a Scottish village. According to him, he made this decision to escape the meme image and to make job hunting easier.

"I didn't want to be known as an internet joke. Besides, it was easier to get a job with an Anglicized name," he says.

He is currently working as a consultant and resume writer. People still sometimes call him Sam Sung, but he has no regrets about the changes.

"If I could turn back time, I would just laugh about it. But at that time, I worried too much and deleted my LinkedIn profile," he says.
