1,486 Medicines Approved for Over-the-Counter Sale

1,486 medicines allowed to be sold without a prescription

The Ministry of Health of Uzbekistan has published a list of 1,486 medicines that are allowed to be sold without a prescription. From now on, patients can use this list to identify which medicines can be purchased freely.

The list includes popular medicines such as pain relievers, cold remedies, antiseptics, and vitamin complexes. Starting from December 12, Uzbekistan implemented a government decision to introduce an electronic prescription system.

However, with the launch of the system, difficulties in purchasing medicines were observed in pharmacies across Tashkent. Social media reports emerged claiming that medicines like paracetamol, ethyl alcohol, nimesil, and aspirin could only be obtained with a prescription, while only vitamins and dietary supplements were sold without one.

Users expressed concerns about increasing queues in pharmacies, potential system malfunctions, and a rise in corruption cases. The Ministry of Health later commented on the situation, stating that the primary goals of the electronic prescription system are to improve treatment safety, strengthen the control of medication prescriptions, and reduce the misuse or illegal circulation of medicines.

Currently, the system is being piloted in Tashkent and 15 other experimental regions. The system is planned to be expanded nationwide by the end of 2026.

In emergency situations, as well as for children, elderly individuals, and patients with chronic illnesses, medicines will be provided without additional restrictions.
