In Kashkadarya region, doctors encountered a rare but very dangerous case: nearly about 1.5 kilograms of hair fibers were surgically removed from the stomach of a 20-year-old female patient. According to the press service of the regional Health Department, it concerns a patient born in 2005 who lives in Qarshi district.
It is noted that the patient had previously been on the “D” register and applied to a medical institution with this problem for the second time. She had complaints such as pain in the upper part of the abdomen, swelling, nausea, and vomiting. For this reason, in the regional multidisciplinary medical center, urgent examinations were carried out by a team of specialists, and a surgical operation was performed.
Surgeons led by doctor M. Pardaev, during the operation, determined that there was a large-volume hair mass in the patient’s stomach — a trichobezoar. It was removed completely. The length of the removed hair mass was 58 centimeters, its width was 7 centimeters, and its weight was 1 kilogram 400 grams.
According to specialists’ conclusion, this condition does not appear in one day: as a result of swallowing hair over many years, such a large mass can form. The most noteworthy point is that this condition was recorded in the patient for the second time. It is reported that earlier she had also undergone a surgical operation of the laparotomy and gastrotomy type with a diagnosis of phytobezoar because of the same kind of situation.
At present, the patient’s condition is stable, and she is being treated under constant supervision of doctors. In order for such cases not to be repeated, complex monitoring with the participation of a surgeon, a gastroenterologist, and a psychiatrist was recommended to the patient. That is, the issue here is not only the stomach — the reasons may be deeper, therefore treatment also requires a team approach.
We remind that earlier in Samarkand, there was also a report about a 29-year-old citizen who, due to stress, swallowed 200 grams of nails. During examinations, it was determined that in his gastrointestinal system there were a large number of metal objects, including nails and self-tapping screws.
These two cases remind of one thing: the idea that the body “will endure everything” is the most dangerous myth. If symptoms such as abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, and loss of appetite are frequently recurring, it is necessary to consult a doctor without delaying. Early action prevents severe complications.
