Judges Being Investigated in Akmal Shukurov Case

Judges reviewed over Akmal Shukurov case
The Supreme Judicial Council has initiated a service investigation into the judges who made a decision regarding the case of Akmal Shukurov. This investigation is being conducted due to the public attention garnered by the controversial ruling.

Previously, the appellate court had altered the sentence issued against Shukurov: instead of eight years and one month of imprisonment, he was sentenced to four years and one month of restricted freedom and was released from the courtroom. According to the Supreme Judicial Council, the service investigation is necessary to examine the conditions under which this decision was made.

Additional information is expected to be provided upon the conclusion of the investigation. Akmal Shukurov was convicted earlier this year in connection with a brawl that took place in March at The Tower Hotel precinct.

He had injured a person who was trying to protect his acquaintance, causing severe injuries. The victim fell into a coma due to the serious injuries.

Shukurov fled the scene but was later detained in Kazakhstan and extradited to Uzbekistan. In late October, the Mirzo Ulugbek District Court sentenced Shukurov to eight years and one month of imprisonment.

However, on December 9, the appellate court reduced the sentence and released him. In mid-December, the case was reconsidered following an objection from the Tashkent Prosecutor's Office.

As a result, the court sentenced Shukurov to six years of imprisonment and re-arrested him.
