The village of Addition Hills, located near Manila, has begun paying 1 peso (about 220 soums) for every five mosquitoes killed, The Guardian reports.
It is noted that through this, officials want to contribute to the fight against dengue fever, a virus spread by insects.
Malaria cases are on the rise in the Philippines. According to the country's Ministry of Health, 28,000 new cases of the disease were registered in January alone - a 40 percent increase compared to the same period last year.
The Addition Hills initiative has caught the attention of the national government, and they are not happy about it. Health Ministry officials say the "cash for mosquitoes" program could be counterproductive. They fear that people could start breeding mosquitoes to make money.
