Runware unveils a portable data center for artificial intelligence

Runware, a company focused on artificial intelligence infrastructure, has officially unveiled its first modular data center, called the Sonic Inference Pod. The solution was designed as a single transportable unit that can operate alongside large hyperscale centers and be installed anywhere, making it highly relevant to current demand in the technology market. In an interview with TechCrunch, Runware founder and CEO Flaviu Radulescu emphasized that distributed computing power of this kind will dominate in the future. According to him, the new pods offer high-quality data processing and inference at a lower cost than traditional serverless platforms and GPU clouds.

Advantages and speed of the modular system

While building traditional data centers can take months or even years, Runware modules can be deployed in a short time. The system can be installed anywhere electricity is available and quickly adapted to new facilities. The pods also use no water, relying instead on a closed-loop cooling system that can be built in a matter of days.

Currently, a total of 10 such pods are operational across the United States, Europe and the Asia-Pacific region. The company serves organizations such as Higgsfield AI and Wix and has 160 ready sites for expanding its infrastructure in the future.

Competing with large centers and security

According to reports, major laboratories such as OpenAI are seeking to build enormous centers across the United States and are even considering deals worth hundreds of billions of dollars. However, Radulescu does not view these projects as competitors to his pods, since the modular system’s flexibility and distributed workload across the network are its key advantages.

Each pod operates as part of a single network. If one device fails for any reason, only that pod stops operating rather than the entire facility, and traffic is automatically redirected to other capacity. Dedicated pods can also be allocated for specific customers.

Resources and future plans

The high energy and resource demands of artificial intelligence centers have sparked various discussions in society. Runware plans to transition its infrastructure entirely to renewable energy sources in the future, although the company’s leadership acknowledges that this goal cannot be achieved immediately.

Radulescu noted that other companies will not be able to quickly copy the technology because of the complexity involved in designing the devices and system layouts. He added that the core mission is to provide high-quality inference. In December, the company raised a $50 million Series A investment to expand its capabilities.
