There is a possibility that the ban imposed on K-pop and dramas in China will be lifted. At a bilateral summit held in the city of Chengdu, Chinese President Xi Jinping and South Korean President Lee Jae-myung reached an agreement to expand cultural exchanges.
In addition, the Chinese leader responded positively to the proposal to hold a K-pop concert in Beijing. According to South Korean Deputy Kim Young-bae, Xi Jinping even discussed this idea with Foreign Minister Wang Yi.
However, on Sunday, South Korea’s Cultural Exchange Committee described the summit talks as an “amicable exchange of opinions,” emphasizing that “it is too early to draw any conclusions.” The unofficial ban on K-pop, dramas, and films was imposed about ten years ago, after Seoul decided to deploy the US THAAD missile defense system.
China considered this system a threat to its own security.
