Zoxran Mamdani becomes New York's first Muslim mayor
Based on data from the Decision Desk portal, CNN reports that 34-year-old Zoxran Mamdani is projected to win the New York mayoral election. He will become the first Muslim to take charge of the city.

According to some reports, Mamdani has received 50.3% of the votes, while other sources state he garnered 42.75%. CNN notes that Mamdani’s victory has become a symbol of success for the progressive wing of the Democratic Party, at a time when national Democrats are not united on how to confront Donald Trump.

At a meeting with his supporters, Mamdani promised to lead New York toward a brighter future and to be a mayor for all city residents. However, US President Donald Trump called the new mayor a communist and emphasized that his election could worsen the city's situation.

"I firmly believe that if Mamdani wins, New York will be on the brink of economic and social disaster," Trump said on his Social Truth page. Mamdani was born in Uganda and grew up in Cape Town (South Africa).

He moved to New York at the age of seven. He studied at the Bronx High School of Science and received a bachelor’s degree in humanities from Bowdoin College.

Since 2017, Mamdani has been a member of the Democratic Socialists of America. He proposes to increase taxes on the rich and raise the minimum wage from $16.5 to $30 per hour by 2030.

Other initiatives among his plans include making preschool education and bus travel free. The necessary expenses for implementing Mamdani’s program will be covered by new taxes on corporations and millionaires.

These taxes are expected to bring $9 billion per year to the city budget.
