Tajikistan Purchasing Electricity from Uzbekistan

Tajikistan purchasing electricity from Uzbekistan

Tajikistan has started purchasing electricity from Uzbekistan. As of mid-December, the daily supply volume reached 2 million kWh. This was reported by Asia-Plus.

According to Tajikistan's Ministry of Energy and Water Resources, Uzbek electricity has improved the energy supply situation in the country.

Dushanbe plans to increase imports from Uzbekistan in the future. Additionally, Tajikistan has reached preliminary agreements on electricity deliveries from Kazakhstan and Turkmenistan.

However, Dushanbe can access the international energy market only through Uzbekistan. Therefore, an agreement with Tashkent is necessary to ensure transit.

Moreover, Tajikistan is working to join the Central Asia Unified Energy System. The country plans to connect to this system in January–March 2024.

It should be noted that energy-saving measures have been implemented in Tajikistan. If a consumer uses more than 4 kW of electricity at a time, the power supply is automatically cut off for 30 minutes.

Additionally, state enterprises are disconnected from the power grid after working hours, and charging stations for electric vehicles do not operate from 6:00 PM to 10:00 PM.

Tajikistan's President Emomali Rahmon announced on December 16 that energy restrictions in the country would be lifted by 2027. He assured the people of Tajikistan that the government is taking measures to resolve this issue.

In particular, solar power plants are being constructed in the republic, and the third turbine of the Rogun Hydropower Plant is scheduled to be launched in autumn 2027.
