Sanctions that may be imposed against the Russian state corporation "Rosatom" will not impact the nuclear power plant (NPP) project currently under construction in Uzbekistan. This was announced by Pavel Bezrukov, Vice President of "Atomstroyexport" JSC.
According to Bezrukov, the corporation has already localized all the primary components of the future plant, ensuring that external restrictions will not affect the construction process. An agreement on the construction of Uzbekistan’s first nuclear power plant was signed during Russian President Vladimir Putin’s state visit in May 2024.
"Atomstroyexport" JSC has been selected as the main contractor for the project, with local companies also involved in the development. The Russian Ministry of Economic Development announced in June 2025 that Tashkent and Moscow had agreed to modify the NPP project’s format.
The revised project will now consist of two units. In early October 2025, excavation work began in Jizzakh Region at the site designated for the reactor energy unit as part of the nuclear plant's construction.
