Digital trap: How much cybercrime cost Uzbekistan has been determined

In Uzbekistan, crimes related to the digital space are becoming a serious problem every year. At a press conference held by the Ministry of Internal Affairs, it was reported that the number of cybercrimes has increased almost tenfold over the past five years.

According to specific figures, between 2021 and 2025, the number of cybercrimes in the republic increased from 4,865 to 62,440. As a result of these crimes, citizens suffered material damage totaling 3 trillion 730 billion soums. The fact that almost 1 trillion 890 billion soums of this amount fell on the 11 months of this year alone shows how serious the situation is.

Experts emphasize that the majority of cybercrimes are related to illegal withdrawals of funds from citizens' bank accounts, fraud, phishing, and violations related to crypto-assets. Especially, there is an increase in schemes aimed at gaining trust through the Internet and obtaining personal data.

In order to effectively counter these threats, the Ministry of Internal Affairs has strengthened cooperation with foreign partners. A system of international exchange of experience, attraction of leading specialists, and training of personnel with modern knowledge is being gradually established. In particular, the Ministry's Academy has established the "Crime Control Activities in the Field of Digital Technologies" program. Starting this year, 100 additional cadets were admitted to study in this field.

In addition, a mechanism for admitting talented young people who have successfully completed the "One Million Programmers" project to this program has been introduced. This is aimed at forming a reserve of local specialists in the field of digital security.

A special digital laboratory has also been launched to combat crimes committed through information technology. During its operation, 483 types of phishing malware that caused significant damage to citizens were identified, and their activities were suspended.

In addition, 2,424 crimes related to the circulation of crypto-assets were solved. The export of 76 billion soums of criminally obtained funds in the form of cryptocurrency from the territory of the republic has been stopped.

In cyberspace, 3,843 internet resources that spread materials threatening public order and degrading the honor and dignity of individuals were blocked. Also, the activities of 1,508 malicious links that encourage fraud were restricted.

According to experts, the issue of cybersecurity now requires a conscious attitude not only of law enforcement agencies, but also of every citizen. Caution when using the Internet, protecting personal data, and avoiding suspicious links remain among the most effective measures against cybercrime.
