2025 marked a period of shifts in foreign brands within Uzbekistan's economy. While some major companies failed to establish a foothold in the country and exited the market, others, including internationally renowned giants, entered seeking new opportunities.
Which businesses exited the market?
Several major financial and retail enterprises were forced to cease operations this year:
- Finance sector: The Central Bank revoked Eurasia Bank’s license for failing to comply with capital requirements.
- Retail: Kazakhstan's supermarket chain "Magnum" shut down its stores after three years of operation.
- Aviation: Wizz Air stopped operations in September due to geopolitical issues in the region.
The hospitality and e-commerce sectors also saw exits: South Africa's "Ocean Basket" chain and China’s "Temu" platform ceased activities due to taxation issues.
New arrivals: Welcome, Burger King and Sinsay!
Despite the exits, Uzbekistan's market saw new and significant players entering:
- Fast-food giants: Burger King finally opened its doors in Tashkent. Additionally, the iconic Krispy Kreme donuts are now available in the capital.
- Apparel: Poland's LPP Group entered with its "Sinsay" brand, with plans to open 20 stores across the country soon.
- Technology and automotive sectors: The Yandex Go Market platform was launched, and China's Geely Auto introduced new electric and hybrid models.
Investment and crypto sector updates
One of the largest projects of 2025 was "Sea Breeze Uzbekistan," registered in Tashkent Region and aimed at attracting $5 billion in investments. Additionally, thanks to a partnership between Binance and Coinpay, legal cryptocurrency transactions became possible in Uzbekistan.
Conclusion
The Uzbek market is becoming increasingly professional and competitive. While entities unable to meet regulatory and capital requirements are exiting, the arrival of internationally recognized brands indicates that the country's investment appeal remains strong.
