A video circulating on social media showing foreign nationals displaying disrespectful behavior towards Uzbekistan's national currency — the som — has sparked widespread debate. The footage features individuals holding a 2,000-som banknote to a flame to light a cigarette while laughing.
It has been reported that the video was shared on the social media platform WeChat via an account named "Kichik Se." According to a source from Kun.uz, the individuals in the video are Chinese workers employed at one of the enterprises located in Tashkent region.
The footage prompted sharp outrage among users towards such treatment of the national currency. Many citizens have condemned the act, calling it not only ethically unacceptable but also a violation of the law.
According to Uzbek legislation, disrespect towards state symbols can lead to criminal liability. Article 215 of the Criminal Code imposes penalties such as fines, compulsory community service, or corrective labor for acts of disrespect towards the state symbols of either the Republic of Uzbekistan or the Republic of Karakalpakstan.
It is noted that Uzbekistan's national currency features the state emblem, and such actions are evaluated as violations under the law. Legal authorities are currently expected to assess and provide an official legal judgment in this case.
The public is demanding clear and decisive measures to address this incident. Such actions are being viewed as a sign of not only disrespect towards national values but also disregard for the country's laws.
