Heavy rain in Medellin turned into a tragedy: landslide death toll is rising sharply

In the Colombian city of Medellin, a natural disaster once again vividly demonstrated how fragile and changeable human life is. On June 24, due to heavy rains in the city and surrounding areas, a powerful landslide occurred, plunging the whole region into grief. According to official data, as of today, the number of deaths from this tragic event has reached 22, and unfortunately, the death toll may rise further.

The exact consequences of the natural disaster are still not fully known. According to the governor's office of the Antioquia department, search and rescue operations continue in the Bello and Altos de Oriente neighborhoods of the city. One of the most difficult and painful aspects of the situation for local residents is that 8 people are still considered missing. More than 390 people are involved in the search — which once again confirms the large scale of this emergency.

Rescuers are using all their strength and resources to find those trapped under debris and the missing. However, what further complicates the situation is that many houses in the city are built on slopes with a high risk of collapse. This means that with each new rain or strong wind, the disaster zone can expand even further.

Experts note that for new buildings, modern architectural and engineering standards are not being applied, and natural hazards are not being taken into account, which worsens the consequences of such disasters. As a result of the landslide, many families have been left homeless, and the social situation in the region has become even more complicated.

At present, local authorities and rescue services are not only searching under the rubble, but also doing everything possible to provide psychological and material assistance to families who have lost loved ones. According to some sources, new rainfall is expected in the area in the coming days, which may further complicate the rescue efforts.

This tragedy in Medellin should serve as a warning and lesson not only for Colombia, but for the whole world. Because every comfort, every new construction must first and foremost be evaluated for safety and preparedness for natural disasters. Local residents are urging that in the future, houses should be built according to standards that prioritize safety over convenience, so that such events do not happen again.
