Scientists Stunned as Dangerous Tiger Shark Appears in New Territory

The capture of a tiger shark, a species not usually found off the coast of Massachusetts, has attracted scientists’ attention. Experts say the incident may be another sign of changes taking place in the marine ecosystem as ocean waters warm and the climate changes.

The incident occurred off the coast of the Cape Cod peninsula. Massachusetts residents and brothers Nate and Nelson Ruett were surprised to discover that the animal caught on their line during a nighttime fishing trip was a tiger shark. Nate Ruett said he recognized the species as soon as he saw the distinctive transverse stripes on its body. They later released the young shark, which was about 1.5 meters long, back into the sea.

Experts say tiger sharks typically live in the Caribbean Sea and other tropical regions. They can grow to more than 4.5 meters in length and weigh up to 635 kilograms. The species is considered one of the ocean’s most predatory sharks, and adults can pose a danger to humans, although unprovoked attacks are very rare.

According to John Chisholm, a scientist at Boston’s New England Aquarium, young tiger sharks have been appearing more frequently in northern waters in recent years. He attributed this to warming Atlantic Ocean waters and said the region could become a breeding ground for them in the future.

Experts note that climate change is pushing not only tiger sharks but also other marine animals, including great white sharks and black sea bass, into increasingly northern waters. Scientists say this process is one of the major changes taking place in the marine ecosystem.
