The ancient Torre dei Conti tower in Rome has collapsed

The historic Torre-dei-Conti tower, located in the central part of Rome in Largo Corrado Ricci Square, has partially collapsed. At the time of the incident, restoration work was being carried out in the building.

Initially, pieces of plaster fell from the roof, and then a more serious collapse occurred. As a result of the incident, one worker suffered a severe head injury and was hospitalized.

Four staff members were rescued, and another person remained trapped under the rubble, but he is alive and conscious. Rescuers are searching for safe ways to extract him.

In addition, a firefighter suffered an eye injury and is being treated by doctors. The area around the tower has been cordoned off, as there remains a risk of further collapse.

The mayor of Rome and the Italian Minister of Culture are working at the scene. The prosecutor's office is investigating the causes of the incident and checking whether safety regulations were observed.

The Torre-dei-Conti tower was built in the 9th century and has been damaged several times by earthquakes. Today, its height is 29 meters.

Restoration work on the tower began in 2022 and was planned to be completed in 2026.
