The richest man in the United Kingdom, Gopichand Hinduja, head of the Hinduja Group family conglomerate, passed away at the age of 85 after a long illness. This was reported by The Guardian.
This year, the Hinduja family topped The Sunday Times Rich List with a fortune of £35.3 billion ($45.9 billion). Gopichand Hinduja managed the multi-sector company involved in banking, oil industry, and real estate together with his elder brother Srichand Hinduja.
Srichand Hinduja died in 2023. In the 1980s, they expanded their empire by acquiring Ashok Leyland and Gulf Oil companies.
Although they were involved in various scandals, including events related to obtaining a passport for his brother through a letter sent to a British minister, Gopichand Hinduja was active in charity work and invested in cultural projects. The Hinduja family owns an 18th-century luxury mansion in London as well as a former military office building, which has now been converted into a luxury residential complex.
The deceased is survived by his wife Sunita, sons Sandjay and Dhiraj, and daughter Rita.
