A fire that broke out on Wednesday afternoon in Hong Kong quickly escalated into a massive emergency within minutes, putting the entire city on high alert. Initially, bamboo scaffolding at a construction site caught fire, and flames rapidly spread through the exteriors of high-rise buildings. Experts report that the fire has engulfed five of at least eight buildings either completely or partially.

Considering that approximately 4,500–4,800 people reside in this complex, the scale and severity of the disaster are even more alarming. Tragically, the casualties include a firefighter who went missing in action while fulfilling his duties and was later found with severe burn injuries. Additionally, dozens of civilians sustained injuries, with reports indicating that 40–60 individuals are in critical condition.

The authorities have classified this tragedy as a fifth-level hazard, the highest disaster category in the city. The last time such a designation was issued in Hong Kong was in 2008. Officials are describing this incident as one of the most catastrophic fires in recent decades.

An official conclusion has not yet been reached. However, it has been emphasized that the rapid spread of the flames through the bamboo scaffolding and external facade materials occurred at an unusual speed. According to local media, some residents had previously reported construction workers smoking and neglecting safety regulations. The police have detained three men suspected of being involved in starting the blaze.

Hong Kong is one of the most densely populated metropolises in the world, with hundreds of skyscrapers. Although devastating fires were more common in the past, strengthened safety regulations in recent decades have significantly reduced such tragedies. However, today’s incident has again highlighted deficiencies in construction oversight, fire safety standards, and urban infrastructure.

Local residents and experts are calling for stricter reforms in safety systems following this incident, particularly re-evaluating the use of bamboo scaffolding during reconstruction projects. The city has been forcefully reminded once again that it remains vulnerable to major fire risks.
