Significant discrepancies exist between the proposals of the Donald Trump administration's peace plan for Ukraine and the readiness of Kyiv officials. The American TV channel CNN reported this on November 26, citing a high-ranking Ukrainian interlocutor informed about the negotiation process.
According to him, "consensus" has been reached on the majority of the 28 points of the plan—at the same time, there are at least three issues where the opinions of the parties significantly diverge.
The discussion concerns, in particular, the transfer of a number of important territories in Donbas under the control of Moscow. The US had earlier proposed that Ukraine agree to the creation of a demilitarized zone there under Russian control. The Ukrainian source stated that "some progress has been made" on this proposal, but a final decision has not been adopted yet.
In addition, the US proposal to limit the size of the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU) to 600 thousand people is also being discussed. Kyiv is currently "not ready to approve" this idea.
Finally, Ukraine does not intend to completely give up the prospect of NATO membership. Such a concession would create a "bad precedent" and would give Russia the right to veto the acceptance of new candidates into the alliance, the source emphasized.
The TV channel noted that all three points are "red lines" for Ukraine but are considered fundamental for Moscow. CNN emphasizes that no matter how the Trump administration tries to portray it, the matter is not about "a few remaining simple points of disagreement" or "minor details that need to be resolved," but rather about the fundamental conditions for peace.
Earlier, Mykhailo Podolyak, advisor to the head of the office of the President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky, confirmed in an interview with DW that the US President's peace plan was partially modified during the negotiations, and "some sensitive issues were set aside for separate discussion."
Andriy Yermak, head of the Ukrainian Presidential Office, informed Axios that Zelensky hopes to meet with Trump personally this week to agree on a joint plan to stop the war.
