
In northern Nigeria, at St Mary’s boarding school in Papiri village, armed men kidnapped children in the early hours of Friday. The armed men arrived on motorcycles and took the children from the dormitories.
The Nigerian Catholic Association reported that 303 students and 12 staff members were kidnapped from the school. In addition, 50 children were returned to their parents. Governor Umar Bago said the number of students had been exaggerated and blamed the school authorities for ignoring previous threats.
Parents are unhappy with the government’s slow response. Many parents protested outside the school, demanding that the government take measures to ensure their children’s safety. They feel neglected by the authorities.
In recent weeks, kidnappings of school students and worshippers have been frequent in northern Nigeria. President Bola Tinubu is taking measures to strengthen security, and the government says it is trying to ensure the safety of all people, regardless of religion or belief.
