Israeli researchers have achieved an important discovery in the path toward extending human life. Their work, published in the journal Nature Aging, shed new light on the hidden mechanisms of biological aging.
The specialists identified an unusual type of T-cell called CD4-Eomes. These cells help detect and eliminate senescent cells — that is, aged cells that can damage tissues. The increase of such aged cells raises weakness, inflammation, and the risk of diseases in humans.
Experiments showed that if the number of these special cells decreases, the aging process in the body accelerates: muscles thin, organ functions weaken, and lifespan shortens. But if they are preserved or strengthened, aging may slow down.
Interestingly, CD4-Eomes cells were found more often in people who lived a long life. Researchers suggest that these cells may serve as a strong “weapon” of the body against aging.
According to the scientists, if in the future it becomes possible to artificially multiply or activate these cells, the healthy part of human life may significantly increase.
