Veterinary restrictions strengthened in Kyrgyzstan due to the threat of Nipah

Kyrgyzstan has temporarily banned the import of animals and animal products susceptible to the Nipah virus from India, starting January 28. According to the press service of the Ministry of Agriculture of Kyrgyzstan, the restrictions are related to the detection of the Nipah virus in India, and the decision was made to strengthen veterinary and sanitary safety.
Officials assess the Nipah virus as a highly dangerous infectious disease. It is mainly explained by the fact that it can be transmitted to humans through animals, with a high probability of causing severe clinical complications. Therefore, temporary restrictive measures on imports are being introduced to prevent possible spread.
The veterinary service of Kyrgyzstan advised citizens not to purchase livestock products of unknown origin. Special attention was requested to be paid to the presence of relevant veterinary documents on products purchased from markets and retail outlets. It is reported that the epizootic situation is under constant control of the Veterinary, Livestock Development, Pasture and Feed Service, and if necessary, additional restrictions may be introduced.
