Dangerous Parasite Outbreak in the US Causes First Deaths

In the US, Cyclospora the outbreak of cyclosporiasis caused by the Cyclospora parasite is worsening. For the first time since the disease began spreading in the country, deaths have been officially recorded. The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services reported this.

According to official data, two patients with pre-existing serious illnesses died from complications of the infection. Thus, deaths linked to cyclosporiasis have been confirmed for the first time during the current outbreak.

According to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, more than 18,000 confirmed or suspected Cyclospora cases have been reported in 45 states since May 1 of this year. Experts consider this the largest cyclosporiasis outbreak in US history.

Michigan is one of the areas hardest hit by the outbreak, with more than 11,200 cases identified since June 22. More than 190 patients have been hospitalized in the state, while the nationwide figure has exceeded 400.

Experts say the Cyclospora parasite is transmitted through water and food contaminated with human feces. The main symptom is prolonged, severe diarrhea, which can cause serious complications, especially in older adults and patients with weakened immune systems or chronic illnesses.

Officials suspect that many cases may be linked to the consumption of pre-cut iceberg lettuce. Experts therefore recommend choosing whole fruits and vegetables, washing them thoroughly, and strictly following food hygiene practices.

For reference, cyclosporiasis is an intestinal infection caused by the microscopic parasite Cyclospora cayetanensis . There is no vaccine against it, but the disease is successfully treated with antibiotics in most cases. Experts emphasize that early diagnosis significantly reduces the risk of serious complications.
