Russia proposed an exchange on Iran

Russia has reportedly floated an unusual proposal to the United States that would connect two major foreign policy files: Iran and Ukraine. According to sources familiar with the talks, Moscow suggested it could halt intelligence sharing with Tehran if Washington, in return, stopped providing intelligence support to Kyiv.
The proposal was allegedly delivered by Russian envoy Kirill Dmitriev to representatives of the US president’s circle, including Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner. People briefed on the matter said the US side did not accept the offer. American officials have not publicly commented on the reported discussions.
The idea itself has alarmed European diplomats, who see it as more than a tactical bargaining move. In their view, the Kremlin may be trying to exploit sensitive security issues in order to drive a wedge between the United States and its European allies, while weakening broader transatlantic coordination over Ukraine and the Middle East.
The reported proposal comes amid claims of deepening military and intelligence cooperation between Russia and Iran. Some reports have said Moscow has provided Tehran with satellite imagery and drone-related technologies, although the Kremlin has denied those allegations. Even so, Western officials have been watching the relationship closely as both countries face mounting pressure from the US and its partners.
Despite reductions in some other forms of American assistance to Ukraine, the United States is still believed to be sharing intelligence with Kyiv. That support remains one of the most critical tools for Ukraine as it seeks to monitor Russian military activity and respond to battlefield threats. Any attempt to curtail that channel would carry major strategic implications.
Sources also said Russia put forward other Iran-related ideas in its contacts with Washington, including a proposal involving the transfer of Iran’s enriched uranium to Russian territory. Those suggestions were also reportedly rejected by the US. While none of the claims have been officially confirmed, the reported exchange highlights the growing overlap between the war in Ukraine, tensions around Iran, and wider geopolitical competition between Moscow and Washington.
